The National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit coalition of diverse consumer, government, patient advocacy, health professional and public health organizations working together to improve health and stimulate conversation between healthcare professionals and patients about the safe, appropriate use of medicines. We help consumers make sound decisions about their health and about the prescription and over-the-counter medicines they take.
Harnessing the expertise and reach of our members, NCPIE develops and provides valuable education programs and community resources for consumers and healthcare professionals, serving as a trusted source of information on issues such as healthcare provider-patient communication, medication adherence, medication risk and error reduction, and prescription drug abuse prevention. Our content always provides actionable health tips and specific questions to address with healthcare providers.
NCPIE sponsors the national “Talk About Your Medicines” Month each October to keep the spotlight on the role that high quality medicine communication can play in promoting better medicine use and better health outcomes. Our activities are guided by three common values:

- To empower consumers to be more informed about and active in decisions affecting their use of medicines;
- To be a catalyst; convener; collaborator and clearinghouse for the development of new, useful, and scientifically accurate information about medicine use that is disseminated in multiple formats to a wide range of audiences.
Collaboration is our key
NCPIE’s membership includes consumer and patient advocacy organizations, healthcare professional and medical specialty societies, schools of pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturers and more. We are also proud of the 35+ years of successful collaborations with federal agencies including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); the Administration on Aging, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ). NCPIE’s recent flagship educational campaigns include Talk Before You Take, Talk About Your Medicines Month, MUST for Seniors, SCOUTStrong BeMedWise Award, Recovery Opens Doors and more.
